Galway United’s Under 17’s pulled off the biggest shock of the quarter-finals when they dispatched the holders St Patrick’s Athletic out of the competition.
Pats had only lost one league game all season, 2-0 at home against Sligo Rovers, demolishing good quality sides all season, scoring a whopping 62 goals in the process.
However, Galway United managed by United legend Alan Murphy, got through the tie in a penalty shoot-out win. It was a disappointing end to the season for Pats, as they had to finish out the game with just 10 men after defender Richie O’Farrell was sent of early in the second half.
“The game was a real challenge for our developing squad, to test the progress they have made this year against an outstanding footballing team in St Pats.”
“We are delighted to have booked our place in the semi-final after an epic penalty shoot-out that could have gone either way.”
“It was a real team performance from the lads and the performance was topped off with Joe Gubbins scoring the winning penalty, which was fitting as his attitude and application has been tremendous all season.”
“We look forward to see who we draw in the semi-final now,” said Murphy.
In that draw, which was made on Monday morning, Galway will have a home tie with Cork City. Both sides finished on 35 points in the Southern Division, with Cork finishing ahead if the on goal difference. In the games between them this season, Galway United won both, a 1-0 win in Bishopstown and a 3-2 victory at East United’s Grounds.
