UCD striker Georgie Kelly broke the clubs League goalscoring record on the final day of the season, when he grabbed a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Athlone Town. In the process he also claimed the First Divisions Golden Boot, after scoring 17 goals, overtaking Cabinteely’s Kieran ‘Marty’ Waters.
The 20 year-old is heading into the final year of a Business Commerce degree, with the opportunity to go and continue his education by doing a Masters degree. However, should he continue to develop as a player, and also keep scoring goals, he will have plenty of potential suitors come either the summer or at the end of next season.
Kelly told us he was thrilled to be the one to break the club’s goalscoring record, “Yeah I was over the moon to beat the record. It had been on the back of my mind for a few games now and to be honest it probably effected my performance a little. So it was a relief to get there in the end.”
While delighted with the personal accolade, Kelly felt that the season could have been better, “This season it was always going to be tough to achieve promotion with the financial backing Waterford had, but we would’ve liked to have been a lot closer to them in the table. Inconsistency killed us and we dropped far to many points throughout the year. With the players we have, we should’ve been putting up more of a challenge.”
His manager at UCD, Collie O’Neill has the height of admiration for his young striker, “Not only has Georgie been a joy to watch this year but what has impressed me most has been the additions he has added to his game, his hold-up play/heading have always been his strengths, but he has added running in behind as well as improving his 1v1 finishing due to the extra work he has done with Evan McMillan at the end of every training session. In fact Evan should probably go down as an assist on a lot of Georgie’s latest goals,” laughed Collie.
“Georgie has a really bright future in the game and I’m sure he can play at a much higher level, not just in Ireland but across the water too. If you were to ask him how his season went he’d probably say it was only ok (which he did), and that will give you an insight into his personality. He never takes anything for granted and is constantly striving to improve.”
