Locke is thrilled to stay on at Wexford as he looks to build something at the club

Prior to Wexford FC’s final match of the 2017 season the club announced that manager Damian Locke would remain in charge for the 2018 season, after agreeing a contract extension.

The club was re-launched at the beginning of the 2017 season as a new entity, moving away from Wexford Youths. The objective at the start of the season was to start from the beginning and take small steps going forward. One of those steps was to not finish at the bottom of the first division table, a feat they accomplished.

We caught up with Damian to ask him about staying with Wexford next season, and the challenges ahead.

On the contract extension Locke said, “I’m delighted to be staying on. I have mentioned previously that we weren't going to get things right immediately, it is going to be important to build for a few years to go and compete at the top end of the table again due to the turnover of players and staff in the last 12 months.”

“It’s another fantastic opportunity for myself given the backing of the club to lead the way next season, it is something I’ve really enjoyed.”

With so much young talent coming through the ranks at the club, with many making lots of first-team experiences this season, would he have difficulty keeping hold of them? “We are very hopeful of holding onto the core of the squad and adding a few new faces to strengthen the squad in certain areas we have identified.”

“We will have plenty of young faces next season that have experienced first team football and know what is expected of them. Where we are right now is much stronger than 12 months ago.”

“All I can ask of the group is to build on the good performances we produced in the second half of the season and we will see where that takes us.”
