Sligo Rovers bounced back from defeat in the Western Derby with an important 1-0 win over Bohemians at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening.
The win moves the bitored out of the relegation places, however just one point clear of Galway United, but also on the same points as St Patrick’s Athletic.
Vinny Faherty (pictured above) put Sligo in front after just nine minutes, when he headed in from a corner, but when Bohemians midfielder Keith Ward was sent off after 24 minutes it looked like Sligo would go ahead and win comfortably.
That wasn’t to be the case, as numerous missed opportunities left the game in the balance throughout, and only for a superb late challenge from Regan Donelon, it could have been a different result.
Manager Gerard Lyttle knew it was a huge win, “It was a great win, and truth be told it was a must win. The boys responded excellently to the disappointment of losing the Galway game.”
“I’m slightly disappointed we didn’t score a lot more goals. I suppose the game should have been out of sight in first half. We missed a lot of good opportunities in front of goal. Their keeper made some great saves to be fair. “
“As for the red card, I think the lad Ward has kicked out so to be fair the ref got it spot on.”
“Like I said before as long as we are creating them it’s not too bad, if we didn’t I’d be worried.”
“We scored from another corner, which is pleasing as its something we work on.”
Sligo’s next game is a trip to Tallaght Stadium to take on Shamrock Rovers next Friday, however Stephen Bradley’s men have the small matter of the FAI Cup semi-final replay with Dundalk on Tuesday, so maybe it’s a chance for Sligo. Lyttle said, “Our next game is going to be a tough one. They (Shamrock Rovers) have a game on Tuesday and then us on Friday. It can be a big thing for any team to play that in a short space of recovery in between. It kinda sums up the fixtures up in this league, Crazy! “
