Athlone Town’s U-15’s hoping to bring some positivity to the club

It’s been a very tough year for everyone involved with Athlone Town football club in 2017, however their Under 15’s have a tremendous opportunity to end the year on a high as the take on Finn Harps in the inaugural SSE Airtricity U-15 League semi-final tomorrow (Saturday) in Bonagee, with a 5pm kick-off.

Dermot Lennon’s side finished 2nd in Group 2, just three points behind another semi-finalist Bray Wanderers/St Joseph’s Boys.

Lennon is very pleased his side have got this far, “We're delighted to be in the position we are in now. We came through a very tough group and a very difficult away quarter final at Waterford. We are delighted with what this group of lads have achieved.”

He knows how tough a game it’s going to be, especially away from home, “It's going to be a very difficult game against Finn Harps as you would expect at this stage. We really don't know anything about Harps only that they topped their group and disposed of a good Bohemians side, so they have performed really well and will make it hard for us on home soil.”

“But it's great to be in the semi-final. We didnt know what to expect when the campaign started and you’re hopeful you can get a couple of good performances. However, they have definitely exceeded expectations.”

“We are very hopefully we can get another good performance from the lads on Saturday.”

Regarding the year the club have had off the field Lennon says the U-15 team has had lots of positives, “From a club point of view it's been very positive and shows the great work that's being done at the underage level within the club. No matter what the outcome is on Saturday it's been a very successful season and we are very proud of what this group has achieved.”
