Having just missed out on a top four finish in their respective divisions, Shamrock Rovers and Derry City fought out the final of the Under 19 Shield at Tallaght Stadium on Saturday.
It was an extremely tight game but Rovers, managed by Aidan Price, took the win and the trophy with a 1-0 win.
It was no surprise to learn that the club’s top scorer Dean Dillon (pictured above receiving his man-of-the-match award from Republic of Ireland U-18 manager Jim Crawford) was the match-winner, but young goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu also deserves praise for some fantastic goalkeeping on the day, denying the Candystripes throughout.
We spoke to goal-scorer Dillon after the game, “Yeah we’re all delighted to win the Shield, because at the end of the day it’s a final for us to go a win, and get a trophy for the club, and luckily we did that.”
“Obviously I’m delighted to score the winner but the most important thing was for us to get the win. It’s just a little bonus that I was the one who scored the winner.”
On his great season with the Hoops Dillon said, “Personally I think i have had a decent season. I think I could definitely score more goals so I’m hoping next year I achieve that.”
