Manchester-born left back Regan Donelon won the Sligo Rovers Young Player of the Year award at the clubs end of season awards and the 21 year-old is looking forward to improving even further next season.
Having come through the youth ranks at the club Donelon is well placed to talk about how special a club Sligo Rovers is to both the fans and the town, “Yes it's a football mad town and the people just want the best for us. The fans always get behind us so that's great.”
“I started with the U-19’s and since then I've loved every minute of it. It's a very special club, and a very big club at that. That's why I don't think we should be in the position we were in this season. It's a big supported club and the fans always support us through the good and bad.”
On winning the Young Player of the Year award Donelon said, “It's always nice to get an award, especially after a tough season. But it's not really about that for me, I just go out to to try and do my job every week and help the team out.”
Sligo survived in the top division on the final day of the season with a 0-0 draw away to Drogheda United and Donelon said that the hard work they put in, especially towards the end of the season was crucial, “Yes it's great to have stayed in the Premier Division. We pulled together as a group and we worked hard to make sure we stayed in the division, we only lost once in the last round of games I think.”
“Hopefully we can push on next season, and do better things. It's what we all want, including all who follow us and support us. We will be working very hard to try and do a lot better next season.”
He believes that manager Gerard Lyttle also deserves a lot of credit, “I've loved working under him and his staff, he always pushes the lads and he gets the best out of them. I think he deserves a lot of credit and he is also very fair.”
After coming through the U-19’s Donelon says that he took his chance when it was given to him, “Yes I got my chance a few years back, and I feel as if I've taken it. I just want to help the team week in week out, and also improve myself. I just try to give everything I've got.”
Going forward into 2018 he’s confident, “I think things are looking up, and hopefully we've learnt from this year. Again that's why we'll all be working very hard to do better things.”
“My own ambitions are to just to try and play as many games as I can, get better every day. I want to help the team out, and do better next season and we'll go from there then.”
