In her first season in management Laura Heffernan guided Wexford Youths to the Continental Tyres Women’s National League title, their third in four years, after a top of the table clash in Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday evening.
Needing a win to over-take Peamount at the head of the standings, Heffernan’s charges scored either side of the break through Emma Hansberry and Rianna Jarrett. Hansberry’s goal was the crucial one, coming just before half-time, as she lobbed Peamount keeper Naoisha McAloon from distance.
We caught up with manager Heffernan and asked her how it felt to be Champions, “It was a bit surreal on Sunday morning waking up and realising what we have achieved. The girls put in an unbelievable team performance on the night and to keep a clean sheet against a team with the attacking quality Peamount has is a huge credit to them.”
She was full of praise for her side, “It has been a long season for the girls. We kicked off our pre-season in January, but their commitment all year has been second to none and they have shown great mental strength during periods in the season when things weren’t going our way.”
The title guarantees Wexford Youths a spot in next season UEFA Women’s Champions League, something Heffernan and her players can now look forward to, but for now it’s time for some rest to recharge the batteries.
Heffernan said, “Everyone now is looking forward to some time off and in a couple of weeks we will start preparing again for the new season ahead.”
