Cork City made Women’s football history on Sunday when they won the FAI Cup for the first time, after beating many people’s favourites UCD Waves 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium.
Clare Shine was the hero as she scored the winning goal, but Cork had heroes all over the pitch and we caught up with two of them.
Defender Nathalie O’Brien (pictured below) said winning the trophy was a goal they had set ahead of the season, “Everybody at Cork City is absolutely delighted we got to bring the FAI Cup home. We set out goals we wanted to reach before the season finished - getting to a final and bringing home the trophy was one of the goals.”
“It's a great feeling that we got to play in the Aviva Stadium and win the cup.”
She was also thrilled personally as she’s been involved with the team during the tough times which makes the win all the more sweeter, “On a personal note, winning this cup means so much to me, coming from losing every game only a few seasons ago to this. It's really a testament to the efforts and dreams of the management and the players.”
“Everyone is absolutely buzzing and we're rearing to go again next season.”
For 18 year-old striker Saoirse Noonan winning the FAI Cup was a dream come true, and was even more special as she won it in front of family and friends. Noonan said, “Personally this is what I have dreamt of, playing in the Aviva as it is a stadium that gives everyone goosebumps, and no matter who you are playing or what the past is playing in that stadium on Cup Final day anything can happen.”
“For me, I just soaked it all in as best I could.”
“Having my family and friends around supporting us is always great. I will never forget it and always will be thankful, because without all the people in the background we would never be the team we are, and wouldn’t have achieved what we did this weekend.”
“It still hasn’t soaked in properly but as the week goes on I’m sure it will. I am so delighted to be part of the team, and on the day I just wanted to go and try do my bit and try to do the best I could.”
“As a whole, we have worked extremely hard. We beat two top sides in the quarter-final and semi-final, and coming into the UCD game as underdogs I think we used it to our advantage. We all said there was no other option but to make history and come home with the cup.”
“It wasn’t our best performance, nerves were high. Everyone was excited and it’s tough to play football. I feel no one played to their true potential, but because we all worked together and everyone put in a huge effort, that’s why we came out on top.”
