Wexford boss Heffernan resigns just a week after winning the league

It’s only been a week since Wexford Youths were crowned Continental Tyres Women’s National League Champions but the Women’s game was rocked on Saturday with the news that Championship winning manager Laura Heffernan has stepped down from her role.

Heffernan, in her first season as manager, guided the club to their 3rd title in four years. However, it appears that not all was rosy in the camp.

She tweeted the following on Saturday afternoon;

“It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to step away from my role with Wexford Youths Women. Following an end of season review it was quite clear that the players, club and management had very different views on the best way forward for 2018. This isn’t a decision I have taken lightly by any means but the welfare of the club is more important than my personal progression. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff involved last season for their commitment and look forward to working with you all again sometime in the future.” #WillAlwaysBeChamps2017

When speaking exclusively to us Heffernan said, “I’m disappointed, I didn’t expect things to pan out like they did. Out of respect for the club I won't go into to much detail as they have been very good to me.”

“However some players felt new management was needed to bring them forward and they are entitled to that and we felt in the interest of the club stepping back was best for everyone involved.”

“Strong differences in opinion leading into a new season would not benefit anyone involved.”

The club later released a statement thanking the coach for her work;

‘It has been a fantastic season for Wexford Youths WFC culminating in an unforgettable night at Ferrycarrig Park last Saturday, as we clinched our 3rd Continental Tyres Women’s National League in 4 years.

We would like to thank all players, management, families, volunteers and supporters connected with the squad for contributing to such a memorable season.

However, following an end of season review and initial discussions around the 2018 season, our manager Laura Heffernan has advised us of her decision not to continue in the role. The club would like to thank Laura and her management team for a fantastic contribution to the team’s success and wish her nothing but the best for her future in football.

The process to find a new manager will commence immediately.’

It remains to be seen who that coach will be.
