Republic of Ireland International striker Rianna Jarrett has had a tough time with injuries throughout her career, having had 3 ACL injuries, so Wexford Youths title success at the weekend was extra special.
The 23 year-old was thrilled to be crowned 2017 Continental Tyres Women’s National League Champions after a 2-0 win over Peamount. She told us, “It's hard to put into words exactly how I'm feeling after Saturdays win. Going into the game we'd nothing to lose, but everything to gain. We were 1 point behind the leaders Peamount, so we knew only 3 points would be good enough if we were to be crowned League Champions and we went out and did just that.”
For the most part Jarrett is just pleased to be back playing the game she loves, “For me it was bittersweet to be able to play a part, as I've missed a lot of football throughout the past 4 years due to injuries. It was a nice feeling to finish out the season on the field after returning to play at the end of June, midway through the season.”
“The game itself wasn't the prettiest by a long shot, but we were the better team in all areas for the best part of the 90 plus minutes. Naturally there was a spell where Peamount were growing in momentum, but I feel we dealt with it very well.”
“The first goal came at the perfect moment, just on the stroke of half time. A moment of class, and beauty from Emma Hansberry.”
She was modest enough when talking about her own goal, which killed off any chance Peamount had of making a comeback, “I was fortunate enough to be able to get my head on Linda Douglas's cross to get the second goal mid way through the second half.”
“It’s an unbelievable experience and feeling being crowned League Champions once again, it's been a long season. A lot of work has gone in both on and off the field, and nights like Saturday night make all the sacrifices worth while.”
They’ll take stock now and enjoy the celebrations, before returning in the new year to see if they can do it all over again. However, they will also have the small distraction of UEFA Champions League football to look forward to.
