Heaney off to a flying start with Bray

By Gerard Mulreaney ( @gerardmulreaney ) After four years st Shamrock Rovers 22 year-old centre-back Sean Heaney felt he need a fresh start. A loan spell with Waterford last season saw him claim a First Division title, and it whetted the appetite for more first-team football. Last Friday night in Oriel Park Heaney and his team-mates came away with a 0-0 draw against perennial title contenders Dundalk. The result justified his decision to link up with Dave Mackey at the Carlisle Grounds. Heaney said, “I really enjoyed my 4 years at Rovers but it got to the stage where I felt I needed to be playing week in week out and didn’t think I was going to get that at Rovers. When I went down to Waterford that’s what I wanted to prove, that I was capable of playing every week. Big deals announced by Dundalk

Massive news coming out of Oriel Park tonight as both Chris Shields (above) and Brian Gartland (pictured below) have agreed to extend their stay at Dundalk by signing 2-year deals, which will run until the end of the 2019 season. Midfielder Shields 26, recently clocked up his 210th appearance at the club and will now enter into his seventh season at Dundalk. He joined the club from Bray Wanderers in January 2012 and has been a regular in the starting 11, winning all domestic honours in his six years at the club including captaining the side to the EA Sports Cup just over a month ago. Vice-Captain Brian Gartland 30, has become a mainstay in the Lilywhites defence over the past four and a half years since arriving from Portadown in the summer of 2013.

Sligo sign Beeney permanently from Chelsea

Sligo Rovers have continued their impressive mid-season recruitment with the news that their on-loan goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney has agreed to sign permanently for the club from Chelsea on an 18-month deal. Beeney came to the club in the off-season to battle for the number 1 jersey with Michael Schlingermann, a battle he won, as he continuously improved in recent months and impressed with his performances. He will join the club on a contract from July the 1st until the end of the 2019 season. Beeney said: “When I sat down with the manager, he said the offer was there to have my future at Sligo Rovers and it was a no-brainer for me. I’ve settled really well here. I hadn’t played this many games in a couple of years and after one or two which I needed to get up to speed, I think it has gone really well. My aim is to keep the number one jersey now that I have it and make it my own. I know Ed (McGinty) is progressing all the time and will challenge me but I know it’s there for me...
