Cork tie midfielder McCormack up for 2 more years

Hot on the heels of Gearóid Morrissey signing a contract extension Cork City have announced that another of their star players Conor McCormack has signed a new 2-year contract with the club.

McCormack joined the rebels at the end of last season after establishing himself as a vital member of the Derry City team that qualified for the UEFA Europa League under Kenny Shiels.

He has become just as important for John Caulfield‘s side this season as they won the title. He’s appeared in 27 league games, and on many occasions at an unfamiliar centre-back position as City needed defensive cover, to show that his versatility is equally as important to Caulfield.

McCormack 27, spoke to CorkCityFC.ie earlier today, “I am delighted with the way the season has gone. We have wrapped up the league and we still have a Cup Final to look forward to. I couldn’t have hoped for a better first season, so am delighted to sign for another two years.”

“I am pleased that I came in and did well and I have been happy with my performances, but I can still improve and hopefully over the next two years people will see the best of me. It’s every player’s dream to play at the highest level and, in this country, that is winning the league and going on to play in the Champions League.”

John Caulfield was delighted to be able to tie down the Carlingford man for two more years, “It is fantastic news. All of our supporters will be absolutely thrilled, because Conor has been a revelation since he signed. Maybe people didn’t realise what a fantastic player he was when he signed, but throughout the season he has been phenomenal for us.”

“He is thrilled to be here and to sign a two-year deal, he wants the club to progress and keep winning trophies. He came into his own this year, he is in the prime of his career and will be a phenomenal player for us over the next two years.”

“He is a natural leader, he has a massive presence on the training ground and in the dressing room. He has had a massive influence since he came in and there is much more of that to come. We need players who are in their prime and can play under the pressure of winning trophies, playing in front of big crowds every week. They are the type of players we need to keep us at the top and challenging for trophies.”
