European Football a big factor for Hale after joining Derry City

Republic of Ireland Under 21 International midfielder Rory Hale yesterday signed on the dotted line for Derry City as he looks to play his part for Kenny Shiels as they look to progress in the league and in Europe in 2018.

Belfast-born Hale is joining the Candystripes after a short spell with Galway United, who he joined from English Championship side Aston Villa, where he excelled in the middle of the park. United were desperately unlucky to end the season relegated to the First Division.

Hale 20, is the grandson of Derry City striker Danny Hale who played for the Candystripes between 1967 and 1971, and who also scored a post-war record of 45 goals in his first season with the club.

The midfielder told us that European Football was a factor in his decision to join Derry, “Yeah it was one of the many factors of me joining Derry. Who wouldn't want to test themselves on the European stage!”

Many people would assume that Hale (pictured above playing for Galway United) would replace the departed Barry McNamee following his move to the Champions Cork City, but he says he’s not a direct replacement, “I agreed to sign for Derry before he left. I don't think I'm going to be straight replacement for him, but I'm sure I can as good as job as he has done throughout the years for the club.”

He’s also happy to play under boss Kenny Shiels, “Kenny was very straight forward with me when we met. He was very keen on me. He's a manager who likes to play which will suit me brilliantly and a manager who gives his players confidence and freedom to play there game.”

The midfielder had lots of options since the season ended, but he says Derry was the best option, “There was plenty of options for me after the impact I made coming to LOI. I think this was the best move for me.”
