Shiels commits to Derry until 2019

After finishing in 3rd in 2016 and 4th in 2017 Derry City Manager Kenny Shiels has extended his contract at the club until the end of the 2019 Season.

The 61 year-old from Magherafelt joined the club in after spending 4 years in Scotland with both Kilmarnock and Greenock Morton. He also spent some time in Thailand as manager of BEC Tero Sasana.

The 2017 League of Ireland season has been the most difficult season in his managerial career following the untimely death of the club’s influential captain Ryan McBride, but he galvanised his groups to finish the season strongly and qualified the UEFA Europa League.

He faces a tough challenge this off-season as he’s set to lose some players to some of the league’s full-time clubs. Aaron McEneff have been rumoured to be off to Dundalk while tough midfielder Barry McNamee is on Limerick’s radar.

Shiels said, “I am delighted that the chairman has shown faith in me. When someone shows faith in me it makes me want to go out and work all the harder to bring success to the club”
