O’Connor looking forward to a fresh challenge with Longford Town

Adam O’Connor was this week announced as the latest signing by Longford Town as their preparations for the new season continue to progress.

The 23 year old central defender signs from Shelbourne F.C where he has been playing since making his league debut in 2013.

O’Connor racked up over 80 appearances during his time in Drumcondra and had become a regular in the heart of the defence in the last few years.

The young defender spoke to us this week after signing for Longford and is very much looking forward to a new challenge and opportunity. “I’m really looking forward to getting started with my new team-mates and new surroundings. It’s all new for me so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Neale Fenn is the man in charge at the City Calling Stadium again this season and his wealth of experience and knowledge of the game is proving to be a real asset in getting players on board and O’Connor is no different.

When Adam was asked about what made him choose the midlands club this season he told us, “I know Neale is a football man who wants to play football the right way. I’m really looking forward to training and playing football for him”

“He was a big influence on me signing for Longford because of the brand of football and attitude towards the game he had when we met up. Hopefully I can learn a lot from him this season.”

O’Connor didn’t have the best of starts with his previous club Shelbourne. Although he made his senior debut towards the end of the 2013 season, they were eventually relegated and Adam will be hoping to get off to a much better start this time around as a new chapter begins for the young defender in Longford.

Similar to plenty of the other clubs in the First Division next season, promotion to the top flight will be the overall ambition for Adam and his new team-mates.

With the fixture list for the 2018 season due to be announced next Tuesday, Neale Fenn and his squad will be eager to see what lies ahead.

Talking about his ambitions for next season Adam said, “Of course promotion is the main objective for our season. I don’t really know who will be main contenders to be honest. If we can play football with the players Neale has signed we should hopefully be up around there.”

With both divisions having ten teams each from next season and also a welcome return of the playoffs, O’Connor reckons this can only be a good thing and he feels its a positive move for the league, “I think the new 10 team division will be better and more competitive for all teams next season.”
