Lyttle disappointed with Sligo's start to the season

With so much excitement heading into the opening game of the season, which was the club’s 3,000th game, Sligo Rovers found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline on Saturday night in a loss to Limerick.

The munster side, under new rookie manager Tommy Barrett, claimed all three points after new signing Darren Dennehy headed in the only goal just after the hour mark.

Gerard Lyttle’s side were very poor on the night and the manager couldn’t hide his disappointment when we spoke to him, “We’re very disappointed because we wanted to put in a good performance for our supporters.” Over 3,000 bitored fans turned up on the night.

Sligo's home form had been pretty good last year and they became very hard to beat in the second half of the season.

Lyttle said that his side lacked some bite in the middle of the park, “We were comfortable up until they scored. We probably need to be a little bit nasty in our play.”

Sligo only named six substitutes on the night as they were down numbers due to injury but Lyttle wasn’t dying to make excuses, “We had a make-shift back four because of some injuries which isn’t ideal but to be honest that’s no excuse. We have a new team and it will take a few games to find out a little more about each other. We will learn an awful lot from this result, as It’s potentially a kick up the ass we needed. It’s the first game we have had on a grass pitch in a month because of the weather, which again wasn’t great preparation. We will watch the game over, learn from it and move on and try to put things right for the next one.”

With the games coming thick and fast now the season is underway, Sligo have little time to get things right with a huge game at home against Derry City next weekend. Lyttle is still optimistic that things will improve, “We will be desperate to put things right against Derry at home next week. It’s a long season ahead and we won’t get too negative just yet.”
