The Dubliner who signed for Wolves as a 16 year old had been lining out for the clubs U23 side most recently and was delighted to get the loan deal done this week as he looks to continue his fast progress both at club level and on the international stage.
“I’m delighted to get the loan move sorted, I was trying to get it done all of January and got it completed right at the end of the month. I’m really happy to get to experience the league and get some tough and competitive games under my belt”, he told us shortly after the deal was announced.
When asked about what it was that made him choose the seaside club of Bray Wanderers the young midfielder put it down to the management team and the positive things he has heard others say.
“I spoke to Dave before I joined and he was a really nice man. I had heard really good things about him and I know he has worked at underage level before as well so I thought it might be the best club for me to get some minutes and game time as well. I have also worked with Graham Kelly who’s the coach here before and I really enjoyed it”
McKenna has really enjoyed his time at Wolves so far and is very happy with the progress he has made to date, but the end goal of breaking into the first team is one that remains high on his list of ambitions. He knows it won’t be an easy thing to do but is determined to do whatever it takes to get there, and he is excited about the latest chapter in his football story.
He said, “I’ve enjoyed my time over in Wolves but I just think now is a good time for me to go and experience something new, something different. I feel I’ve learned quite a lot over the few years I’ve been at Wolves and I thought it would be good to go out and test my ability in the league.”
McKenna continued, “Of course the ambition is the first team at Wolves, but you see how well they are doing this year and with every game it looks tougher and tougher for that to happen. All you can do is train and play your best and if you do get that chance one day, you’ve to make sure you take it”.
For the moment, the next six months is all that matters for Dan and making sure he gets the regular playing time that he is after and continues progressing as well as he has done in the last number of years.
