Defence is the key for Dundalk says Massey

Dundalk will head to Inchicore on Monday evening hoping to continue the momentum they created following their 1-0 win over the champions Cork City in Friday night.

The Lilywhites are almost at full-strength, with only John Mountney the only absentee as he recovers from his medial knee operation, however he is nearing a return.

Stand-in captain for Dundalk this season is Dane Massey and he couldn’t hide his delight after the huge win on Friday over their biggest rivals. “It was brilliant,” said Massey. “The build-up to the game all week was fantastic. The turnout was great to see and the atmosphere was brilliant, especially when we scored the goal. The place just erupted.”

While Dundalk have added to their striking options this season, with the arrival of Ronan Murray and Patrick Hoban, it is the signing of central defender Daniel Cleary who’s made a huge impact in a very short time. Cleary was immense on Friday night, and his partnership with for St Pats player Sean Hoare looks to be flourishing early on. With former Liverpool player Cleary only 22 and Hoare 23, it only bodes well for the future.

Massey was delighted to keep another clean sheet on Friday, “It’s great. Confidence is flying now, but it’s only three points at the end of the day. It’s another clean sheet as well which is a big confidence boost for the back four and the goalkeeper.”

“To keep four clean sheets is great. We’ve competition all over the back four. If you’re in there, you have to be at the top of your game to keep your jersey. Fair play to Gary Rogers as well, he pulled out another big save tonight as well.”

The game against St Pats comes in the middle of three games in seven days, and Massey expects manager Stephen Kenny to fully utilise his squad over the three games, “We’ve got a quick turnaround to Pats now which is good. We’ve a big enough squad to deal with it and good enough players to come in, so we’re looking forward to it.”
