Derry City manager Kenny Shiels is bringing his side back to the capital tonight, to take on Shamrock Rovers, as he looks to extend their great run of results against Dublin-based clubs.
In the 20 games he’s overseen in Dublin, Derry have won 15 of them, and he knows that his side don’t have any fear going there. He said, “it's just a statistic, but it means that we go there and we’re not afraid. We’re very very young and it will be a tremendous task to get something from the game.”
Derry will come up against a Shamrock Rovers side containing a player that was extremely close to joining the Candystripes, as former Fulham star Sean Kavanagh changed his mind at the very last minute after Rovers made him an offer. Shiels was disappointed to miss out in his signature, “Yeah Sean is a great player. It was really hard to take losing him, and I'm not blaming anyone for that, but when you do all the work and put him up in his new accommodation are you have him here in situ we were just waiting for clearance from Fulham which was so slow. It’s in the paper that we took him down to Waterford just to show him how we play and then we lose him to Shamrock Rovers. It’s not an easy one to take but we’ll get over it.”
When asked if Derry would take a point in Tallaght Shiels said, “We don't go into games to get a point, we go in to win every game. We’re not happy to get just a point, whether it be Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers or Cork. You just want to win the game.”
Team news for the game in Tallaght Stadium is that Gaven Peers, Armin Aganovic, David Hopkirk is out Chris Turner is now out with a torn calf while Connor McDermott is doubtful.
